Karna is seeking a high-energy senior-level Communications Specialist  who enjoys a fast-paced environment and has substantial experience in communications planning and execution to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals in developing and defining the global communications strategy for one of the nation’s leading public health agency. 

This full time position is located in Atlanta, GA in support of the government contract. The qualified candidate will develop communications strategies and tactics in support of set priorities and programmatic goals and will be responsible for leading the implementation of a wide array of internal and external communication projects. This position will provide strategic support, technical assistance and consultation to the Division staff related to its global HIV efforts as part of the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) as well as the agency’s global TB activities. 

Specifically, this position will provide support in the areas of communication planning, message development, media relations, materials development, creative direction, and other related projects.  The candidate must be open to domestic and international travel, with the potential for multiple trips per year. 



Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic communications planning
  • Develop key messages in support of Division programs, initiative and issues
  • Develop and distribute division-wide routine communications (e.g. newsletters, Updates, blogs, fact sheets, briefing documents, intranet and external website content)
  • Media relations to include media planning, materials development (e.g. press releases and media kits), media pitching and media training
  • Develop executive communications including leadership presentations and speeches
  • Integrate social media tactics into overall communications efforts
  • Provide support for logistics of annual and monthly meetings
  • Track program activities and deliverables using Excel spreadsheets or other tools as needed
  • Provide senior level communications consultation to Division leadership and SMEs
  • Gather and analyze relevant data for the development of communication products
  • Translate scientific information into easy-to-understand language for non-scientific audiences
  • Respond to inquiries or information requests from headquarters and the field and provide communications guidance





  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, English, Public Health, Public Policy, or related fields with a minimum of 6 years of experience
  • 3-5 years’ experience of integrated strategic communications
  • Previously overseen processes from inception to evaluation
  • Previous experience working at the CDC in applicable role
  • Knowledge of TB and HIV
  • Experience working in the field of Global Public Health
  • Experience developing presentations/slide sets and delivering presentations
  • Experience working with a range of stakeholders including senior leadership, subject matter experts and other internal and external partners.
  • Ability to multi-task effectively without sacrifice to quality

  • Excellent written and communications skills


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Journalism, Public Health, Global Health, Public Policy, Communications, or related fields with a minimum of 4 years of experience
  • Previous experience in the area of policy and communications at CDC or other agencies involved in HIV, TB or global public health (UNAIDS, WHO, USAID, State Department)
  • Strong understanding of communication theory and its application to strategy
  • Experience leading a team or leading a collaborative effort on behalf of a team or organization
  • Experience with translating scientific information into easy-to-understand language for non-scientific audiences
  • Experience in identifying new communications technologies and channels to strengthen communication dissemination and readership
